Division Deep Dive: Q&A with Travel Medical Lab Recruiters
Jive with Joe
As a veteran healthcare staffing recruiter, Joe knows a thing or two about supporting his travelers. He’s passionate, experienced, and empathetic — this is Joe.
Megan Bebout: Hi, Joe! So excited to show off your awesomeness to our travelers. Share something about yourself that you’d want them to know.
Joe Morlan: Hello, of course! So, I’ve been with Fusion Medical Staffing for nearly 10 years. I started out as a client manager in our nursing division and then made the transition to the lab team in 2017.
Outside of work, I have a beautiful wife of 16 years, and we have two children. We’re heavily involved in our kid’s activities, so it keeps us busy!
MB: Wow married 16 years, amazing! When it comes to recruiting, what’s the best “unexpected perk” you’ve helped a traveler discover on their assignment?
JM: One of the coolest things we get to do as recruiters is help people find new hobbies, interests, and adventures as they travel across the U.S. I’ve had so many travelers tell me about how an assignment changed their life for the better. It’s really cool how travelers experience all types of different things depending on where they are in the country.
MB: So true. In your almost 10 years of recruiting, what’s the wildest thing you’ve seen a traveler do to stand out in the job market?
JM: Man, when I first got into medical staffing, I used to have travelers that would attach videos of themselves demonstrating job duties and talking into the camera like it’s an interview when they would send items in for their profiles.
MB: Ok but that’s kind of iconic! Last q — you have to create a go-to travel-themed playlist. What are the top five songs you add?
JM: I’m going with “Send Me on My Way” by Rusted Root, “Today Was a Good Day” by Ice Cube, “I’m Shipping Up to Boston” by Dropkick Murphy’s, “California Love” by Tupac, and “On the Road Again” by Willie Nelson.
Fun facts about Joe
⭐He can juggle!
⭐When he has time, Joe loves to cook, play golf, watch movies, and spend time outdoors
⭐He became lab division manager in 2022
Kick it with Karlee
She’s beauty, she’s grace, she cannot be replaced — she’s Lab Account Manager Karlee! Let’s get to know more about this gem.
MB: Hey Karlee, let’s get right into it. If you could host a traveler trivia night, what would be the most challenging question?
Karlee Pohlman: If I could host a traveler trivia night, my most challenging question would be: which states in the U.S. require a state-specific license for medical lab professionals (MLT/MT/MLS), in addition to the national certification?
MB: Excellent question. I personally couldn’t tell ya — could you share the answer with the class?
KP: The answer is: California, Florida, New York, Louisiana, Nevada, West Virginia, North Dakota, Montana, and Tennessee.
MB: Impressive! What’s the most interesting place or location you’ve learned about through a traveler’s story?
KP: This is a tough one, but I think Salem, Massachusetts has become the top. I’ve learned how cool this place is during Halloween time, and it’s now become a bucket list location for me during October.
MB: So amazing. Last one, if you could create a “Lab Travel Recruiter’s Hall of Fame,” who would be the first inductee and why?
KP: The first inductee into my Lab Travel Recruiter’s Hall of Fame would be Fusion Medical Staffing’s one and only Tony Heer. Tony is truly the GOAT (aka greatest of all-time) inside and outside of the workplace. With 20+ years of experience, he has a strong reputation around here. He has everyone’s respect — travelers, clients, all recruiters, client managers, and everyone in-between.
Everyone needs to take a page out of Tony’s book. He’s also climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro and completed the Burning Man Ultramarathon!
Fun facts about Karlee
⭐She’s a dog mom to a little Australian Shepherd named Cane
⭐Karlee’s husband Garrett is also a recruiter at Fusion Medical Staffing but in our cardio/therapy division
⭐If she had to pick a mascot for the lab team, it’d be Dexter from “Dexter’s Laboratory”
Jest with Jevan
f you’re looking for a travel medical lab recruiter who’ll laugh with you, meet you where you are, and come prepared to every conversation with a silly icebreaker, look no further than Jevan.
MB: What’s up, Jevan? Diving in, if you could create a dream assignment for one of your lab travelers, what would it look like?
Jevan Booth: If I could create a dream assignment, it’d be anytime of the year in St. George Island, Florida — ideally working four 10-hour days!
MB: Oh, love that! Say you’ve invented a traveler-themed holiday. What does it celebrate?
JB: My traveler-themed holiday would celebrate food. Everyone comes together when there is food!
MB: If you were a guest on a healthcare travel recruiting podcast, what would the topic of your episode be about and why?
JB: My podcast episode would be about healthcare travel agencies and what travelers look for when picking a travel company. We always love to learn this info so we can better serve our travelers!
Fun facts about Jevan
⭐His name is pronounced like “Kevin” but with a “J”
⭐Jevan is happily married with two sons and a German Shepherd
⭐If he could be a travel superhero, he’d be Iron Man
Cheers for Katie
It may be hard to believe because she’s such a rock star recruiter, but in a past life, Katie worked in public accounting. Here’s how we got lucky enough to have her at Fusion Medical Staffing!
MB: Katie! So good to see you. Can you tell us how you got here?
Katie Prest: Hey, thank you so much! I actually have my bachelor’s degree in accounting and worked in public accounting for nine years before coming here. I first joined Fusion Medical Staffing as a sales billing coordinator and now I’m a coverage specialist on our lab division.
MB: Incredible. If you could swap places with one of your travelers for a week, what would you most look forward to?
KP: If I could swap places with one of my travelers for a week, I would most look forward to being in a new city and seeing and experiencing new places!
MB: So relatable. If you could share a meal with any famous traveler or explorer (alive or dead), who would it be and why?
KP: Oooh, it’d be Ferdinand Magellan, Portuguese explorer. I’d want to dine with him because every time my dad gives me directions, I have no idea what he’s talking about (I suck at directions), and I always say, “Okay, Magellan.”
MB: That’s an excellent answer. Final one — you’ve been asked to host a talk show about medical lab travel — what’s the title of your show and why should people tune in?
KP: The title of my show would be “Live with Lab.” People should tune in to get real-time updates on all of the lab positions available and what the market is doing before deciding if they want to travel. We love well-informed travelers!
Fun facts about Katie
⭐She played softball throughout college
⭐She loves to brag about her daughter, three older brothers, two nieces, nephew, and her black lab named Winston
⭐In her free time, you can catch Katie bodybuilding/weightlifting, playing co-ed slow-pitch softball, and fishing
