Division Deep Dive: Q&A with Travel Radiology Recruiters

Amanda puts the “heart” in “healthcare”

Amanda familyDog mom. Youngest of four sisters. High school softball coach. Passionate relationship builder. Fusion Medical Staffing Radiology Recruiter Amanda Butera puts her heart into everything she does. That’s what makes her one of the best in the biz.

Megan Bebout: Hi, Amanda! So great to chat with you today. Can you share the most unique or interesting assignment location you’ve found for a traveling radiology professional?

Amanda Butera: Hey, yes! Ok, so each assignment is so unique in its own way, but my favorite place to send travelers is anywhere in the Pacific Northwest (PNW), especially if they’ve never been there before. The beauty of that corner of the country is unmatched and is always such a wonderful experience for travelers. Plus, I get to see some cool pictures from them along the way, and I’m not complaining about that!

MB: We looove the PNW! Do you have a funny or unexpected experience that one of your travelers encountered while on assignment?

AB: One of my long-time travelers — who’s from the southeast corner of the country — took an assignment in the PNW on a whim, just for the experience. Fast forward and she ended up becoming the manager at this facility and is now the one hiring travelers! Everything really came full circle for her. She even got the chance to hire some travelers that she’d met on different assignments!

For myself, the most unexpected part of the job is the friendships that come along while working with travelers. I’ve been lucky enough to become great friends with some of my travelers and get to experience such cool opportunities through them. The travel community is so special, and I feel so lucky to be part of it!

MB: You’re like the human version of a cinnamon roll — so sweet and warm! Final question: is the process of how you match a traveler with their ideal destination more of an art or a science?

AB: The simple answer is both. There’s nothing better than a traveler getting their “unicorn” job. As a recruiter, I’m constantly asking questions and listening to what my travelers want. Do they want to be closer to home? Do they have friends or family that live across the country? Or do they want a completely new adventure?

Another thing I love to ask is what they like to do when they’re NOT working. At the end of the day, one of the perks of traveling is the unique opportunity to experience new things. Only a portion of the time is spent working, so why not go somewhere that has all the extra things a traveler likes to do?

All these things go into finding the best destination for a traveler. I’m always on the lookout for the specific job they’re wanting, and then some.

The man, the myth, the legend: Kyle

Kyle familySkilled traveler resume builder. Daring DIYer. Gifted golfer. Family man. That’s Fusion Medical Staffing Radiology Recruiter Kyle Pellan. Let’s kick off introductions with the man, the myth, the legend himself.

MB: Kyle! Very important question: if your team were superheroes, what would its signature move be for finding the coolest radiology jobs for our travelers?

Kyle Pellan: Man, that’s tough. I don’t think I can narrow down just one, so my answer is this:

  • We’d have the strength of Colossus because we have strong relationships with our facilities and client partners
  • We’d have the brains of Iron Man since our team is unique in that we focus solely on radiology while still understanding different modalities
  • We’d have the speed of Quicksilver because we have high speed-to-placement — we never let a good job go by
  • We’d have telepathy like Professor X to help us think outside the box and pitch great radiology jobs a candidate hasn’t considered before
  • We’d have the leadership of Storm since our team leads and managers have decades of combined experience

All these things combined, our signature move would be called “the fastball special.” That’s where we work together to submit strong candidate profiles to amazing job openings as soon as they’re open.

MB: Wow, so thorough — I love it! Now, if you could work a travel job in any fictional universe, which one would you choose and what would be the first thing you did while there?

KP: I would choose to work in Level I Trauma at Gotham City General Hospital. After my shift, the first thing I would do is take a ride in Bruce Wayne’s Batmobile.

MB: Great answer. Final q: if you could swap roles with one of your travelers for a day, what aspect of their job would you be most excited to try?

KP: Hm, I’d have to say using a C-ARM in surgery. I would be excited to play such a crucial role in the success of the surgery. Plus, there are lots of different medical professionals involved from other divisions and working together as a team for the hospital would be an amazing experience!

Richard, the raddest recruiter in town

Richard familyHappily married man. Ace recruiter. Owner of the real Slim (Shady). It’s time to meet the raddest recruiter in town, Richard Timmerman, Fusion Medical Staffing radiology account manager – team lead.

MB: Hey, Richard. Tell us your favorite radiology-related joke or pun that always gets a laugh.

Richard Timmerman: Here it is: why did the skeleton become a radiologist?

Because it wanted to see through its own bones!

MB: Well played, sir. Well played. Have you ever played matchmaker with radiology professionals and assignment locations that vibed perfectly with their niche interests?

RT: Oh, yes! We do this all the time. My favorite spot to brag about is Coo’s Bay, OR. Coastal Oregon has a very laid back vibe and within driving distance, you can be in National Forests, the ocean, mountains, and many other unique places that are perfect for travelers who love the outdoors.

MB: If you could transport any famous historical figure to the present to work in radiology, who would it be?

RT: Hm, I think any historical figure with relevance to imaging would be amazed at all the advances we’ve made. (I’m looking at you, Wilhelm Rontgen).

Jen is 10 out of 10

Jen familyMath whiz. Travel enthusiast. 10 out of 10 healthcare recruiter. Dog and human mom. Fusion Medical Staffing Radiology Recruiter Jen Blair wears many hats.

MB: Hi, Jen! Thanks so much for hanging out with us. To kick us off, can you share the most unexpected skill or talent that you’ve seen in one of your travelers?

Jen Blair: Hello, yes! The thing is all my travelers are absolute rock stars in their work and kill it on their assignments. I am so grateful to have such amazing people on my team!

Honestly, the number of times that my travelers have helped out in ways they didn’t necessarily need to is inspiring. From adjusting their own schedules and days to help out the healthcare facilities with something to accepting last-minute patients, it truly shows the selflessness of our travelers.

Jen teamMB: Love that the most. Thinking about how amazing our travelers are, if you could create a mascot for the radiology team at Fusion Medical Staffing, what would it be and what would its catchphrase be?

JB: Ok, this one was hard for me because I feel like I am the least creative person ever. But I think if we had a mascot, it would be a life-size skeleton. That way, we can dress it up according to the holidays, events, etc. Its catchphrase would be something like, “Do something RAD every day!”

MB: LOL’ing at the pun! Lastly, if you could create a reality TV show about the daily life of a radiology recruiter, what would it be called, and what kind of antics would it feature?

JB: I like it! The name of our reality show would be “It’s a rad life” and daily antics would include daily phone calls, talking to new people, and finding new, fun places to go. It would also include traveling around the world to see all of the adventures and different landmarks, new people, new weather, new backdrops!
